Should you bring your dog into a grocery store?

If you're asking yourself, should I bring my dog into a grocery store read this.

Are dog's in grocery stores in Los Angeles one-off thing or is this phenomena happening everywhere? I remember a few years back when the only dogs I'd see in grocery stores were actual service dogs. What has happened? There are so many reasons NOT to bring your dog into a grocery (or any establishment with food). Below are a few that come to mind:

Reasons NOT to bring your dog into a grocery store:

  1. It is against the law to bring your dog into a grocery store (Code 114371D).
  2. It is unsanitary to have your dog in a grocery store: Dogs shake, itch, drool which can leave harmful bacteria on the food we buy.
  3. Some people are allergic to dogs and shouldn't have to worry about a dog being in the store while shopping.
  4. Others are afraid of dogs and shouldn't have to worry about a dog being in the store while shopping.
  5. They can be distracting to an actual service dog particularly when untrained (majority of dogs in stores are untrained).
  6. Dogs need structure and boundaries and do not need to go everywhere with you
  7. You respect other people and dogs.

Reasons TO bring your dog into a grocery store:

  1. You have a disability and a certified service dog (Therapy and ESA's are not service dogs and have no business being in grocery stores).
  2. You are unaware of the rules/laws (now you know).
  3. You are a narcissist and can careless about other people and dogs.

Hopefully people will read this and take others into consideration before bringing their dog into a grocery store. Many dog owners and non-dog owners do not want to shop with dog's shaking, sniffing, drooling and scratching around their food. Not to mention, having multiple dogs that don't know each other in an enclosed location is never wise let alone a location where people buy their food.

If you really want to bring your dog into a store choose one that does not serve food like a Home Depot or Loews.

Thanks for being a responsible and respectful dog owner.
